Environment Artist

Jan 10

We're looking for someone creative to join Gravity Well and help us prototype and discover our unique stylized art environments. This position requires you to have an excellent understanding of art fundamentals – compositions, shape language, color theory, lighting and building believable spaces.

Since we are very early in development, you would have a huge impact on the game’s look. You would need to research, create and experiment with shaders and techniques as we explore looks.

What You'll Do:

  • Collaborate closely with Hethe Srodawa (our Art Director) and Game Designers to create stunning, stylized 3D environments and bring our game worlds to life
  • Establish a unique and stylized 3D look for our game. Contribute significantly to style guide development and support the vision for the game.
  • Clarify goals, and help others align around them
  • Create large stylized natural environments, structures, vehicles, props, textures and materials
  • Own and drive pipelines, re-use, planning and optimizations
  • Be able and willing to coach your craft discipline technically, such as in tools, techniques and workflow/pipelines
  • Quickly iterate on an idea, as well as take an asset to a final optimized state
  • Determine which software will benefit a specific pipeline or project
  • Review and fix bugs

You Have:

  • Experience creating AAA quality environment assets, from block outs to shipping optimizations.
  • Advanced knowledge of Maya, blender, 3ds Max, Photoshop, Zbrush, Substance, and other 2D/3D tools
  • A pragmatic approach to dealing with technical constraints
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to take constructive feedback
  • The ability to mentor and empathy for fellow artists
  • Experience creating and implementing shaders
  • Experience creating PBR materials
  • Experience hand painting textures
  • Extensive experience with lighting (ideally in Unreal)

Ideally You'll Have:

  • 3+ years of experience working in games and on environments
  • Experience with Unreal Engine 4
  • Experience creating large open worlds
  • Experience in designing/building modular systems for environment creation
  • Strong ability to design both interior and exterior environments, from furnished occupiable spaces to grand vistas
  • Strong sense of environmental storytelling and a keen awareness of what makes even a stylized world feel real

What You’ll Get:

  • The base pay for this role is $125,000 to $175,000 USD per year and is applicable to US-based employees only. The base pay will vary depending on specific location (e.g. working remotely in Canada vs US), experience, qualifications, etc.
  • In addition to the base pay, we offer profit sharing and company equity to all employees, regardless of location
  • Industry leading medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Employer sponsored basic life insurance & AD&D
  • 401k retirement program
  • Flexible work hours
  • Unlimited PTO and sick time
  • Paid parental leave

Some benefits listed, such as the 401k plan for employees in the United States, may vary depending on your employee status and location.

Where You'll Work:

  • This position is for US and Canadian residents. We have an office in California if you like to come to an office, but most employees work from home across different US time zones and that's totally fine.
